Swimming Pool Closed For Refurbishment

Thornbury Active Centre

Thornbury Active Lifestyle Centre’s swimming pool is closing for nearly two months from Nov 4th 2024 for a £650,000 maintenance and environmental improvement programme to take place.

Swim clubs, members and the general public have been informed of the project, which will see the pool reopen on January 2nd, 2025.

South Gloucestershire Council, which owns the building and facility, has contributed around £500K to the costs.

Circadian Trust, the charity that operates the region’s Active Lifestyle Centres in Thornbury, Yate, Kingswood, Longwell Green and Bradley Stoke, is investing the remaining £150K.

The works will include a new swimming pool air handling unit with full heat recovery, this will improve the pool hall environment and save energy and carbon emissions.

Circadian Trust will be refurbishing the pool hall and completing essential works to the pool tiles and additional tiling to the pool walls.

All lighting, windows and internal and external doors will also be replaced to maximise energy efficiency.

The pool is also well known in Thornbury for its multi-coloured circular pods that hang from the ceiling – known locally as ‘The Smarties’. These will be undergoing a respray, having not had their colour updated since their installation in 1978.

Mark Crutchley, CEO of Circadian Trust said: “Thornbury swimming pool is a hugely popular part of our community and has been for 46 years.

It is vital that we keep our facilities to the standard that both our member’s expect and that, along with our Council partners, we as a Trust want to provide.

“Our project team will be particularly looking at bringing environmental improvements that will contribute to the ongoing eco-standards we strive for. We look forward to reopening in the new year.”

Councillor Adam Monk, cabinet member responsible for resources at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “People love Thornbury’s pool. The ‘Smarties' are legendary!

“We thought it was really important to make a substantial contribution towards reviving the pool and making it more climate friendly.

“It’s a place people go to get fit and have fun, and that shouldn’t be taken for granted.”
