History Talk: Elizabeth Blackwell of Bristol
Olveston Methodist Church
Olveston Parish Historical Society History Talk: Elizabeth Blackwell of Bristol, First Woman Doctor
Mary Wright will tell us the astonishing story of this Bristol woman, born in 1821, one of nine children. Her family moved to America when she was 11 and, growing up there, she became determined to qualify as a doctor. Not surprisingly, she had to show extraordinary persistence to be accepted as a medical student.
Hers is a truly inspiring story of achievement despite the odds. At the age of 27 she graduated in medicine in New York State, the first woman in the world to qualify and register as a doctor. She also lived, for more than half her long life, in England and was the first woman to have her name on the British Medical Register.
Come and be inspired by this woman who battled prejudice and difficulty to beat a path for women in medicine.
