CANCELLED - TERRY STEVENS - Tyntesfield: Progress and Discoveries
Cossham Hall, Thornbury
This talk from Terry Stevens gives a brief history of the North Somerset house, which was bought in 1844 by William Gibbs for his growing family and is now in the care of the National Trust.
The audience will hear how restoration work is progressing and also learn about the treasure trove of objects discovered during extensive inventory research, which is still continuing. An initial estimate reckoned there were possibly 40,000 items to be listed but the total now well exceeds 50,000 - ranging from paintings to ornate furnishings.
Gibbs remodelled the original regency house into a grand Gothic structure and each of the following three generations left their mark on Tyntesfield. It is regarded as one of the last great Victorian houses to have survived with virtually all of its contents intact, making it a great source of information about the life and culture of the time.
