The Butcher's Hook, Thornbury
Dimpled pint mugs? Check. Hand-pulled real ales? Check. Draft real ciders? Check. Log fires? Check. Flagstone floors? Check. Seems we’ve got pretty much all you need for a traditional pub... except there’s something missing... traditional pub games!
Forget Jenga, Monopoly and Buckaroo, we’re talking proper traditional pub games. In case you haven’t heard of it or played it before, shove ha’penny is a wonderfully simple but very skilful pub game that came into existence in the 1840s (earlier versions date back to the fifteenth century!). It involves sliding a coin across a lined slate or wooden board to rest in between the lines or “beds”. The game has all but died out in UK pubs but we’re bringing it back!
Shove Tuesday will occur on the second Tuesday in every month at the Butcher’s Hook from 7.30pm. Teams consist of two people and the team with the most amount of games won at the end of the night wins some of our exquisite bottled beer to take home with them. The team which clocks up the most wins at the end of the season will be awarded with The Butcher’s Hook Shove Tuesday Trophy, a prize we haven’t even thought up yet, plus the bragging rights across town for being the best at a game that nobody has even heard of!
Don’t worry if you’ve never played it before, hardly anyone has, plus we can show you the rules on the night. Entry is £2 per team with all proceeds being donated to local charities. It’s going to be a lot of fun!
