For Whom the Bell Tolled: Stories Behind the Stones

St Mary's Church, Thornbury

6–7.30pm

A special guided walk around St Mary's Churchyard, led by Meg Wise of Thornbury & District Museum.

In 1879, a young woman called Lucy Derrick was brutally murdered on the road just outside the town. She was laid to rest in the churchyard. Soon her tale was forgotten by all but a few people and over time her headstone became dilapidated and displaced.

Last autumn, volunteers at Thornbury & District Museum decided to try to get the stone restored and, with the generous assistance of Thornbury Town Council, this project was achieved earlier this year.

Local historian Meg Wise will relate Lucy’s tragic story and point out the graves of some of the other fascinating townspeople from the past.

Meet at the Church for a 6pm start. The walk will take about one and a half hours. We regret that the walk is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Tickets (£7.50) must be purchased in advance from the Museum by phone (01454 857774) or email or by visiting the Museum on Tuesdays-Fridays 1-4pm, Saturdays 10am-4pm.

The money raised will go towards the restoration costs of Lucy’s headstone.
