Art History Course: An Era and its Art - In with the New

The Chantry, Thornbury

Modernism and the Avant Garde

The twentieth century was a period of opposing ideologies, global conflicts, and identity politics, alongside dizzying developments in technology.

The century begins with inventions and discoveries that herald our modern era: Einstein's theory of relativity, Freud's psychoanalysis, X-rays, splitting of the atom, mass-produced cars, powered aircraft.

Self-conscious young artists announce new avant-garde styles in strident manifestos: Fauvism, Cubism, Orphism, Rayonism, Purism, Expressionism, Vorticism, to name but a few!

Some of Modernism's great artists: Matisse, Picasso, Kandinsky, create new languages of form and self-expression.

Join me to explore the ever-changing art of this fast-paced era.

10.30am–3.15/45pm Tea and short informal discussion session from 3.15pm

Fee: £30.00 to include coffee/tea and biscuits (or £54 for 1 & 2)
